The Journal of Regional Energy Governance and Security publishes original, peer-reviewed research articles only. The journal does not consider book reviews, policy briefs, commentaries, or other non-research formats. More about "Aims and Scope"
All submissions are expected to present original scholarly contributions grounded in International Relations and related disciplines, and to engage substantively with the journal’s focus on regional energy governance and security.
Please ensure that your manuscript includes both a Funding Statement and a Conflict of Interest Declaration, as these are mandatory for submission. Where no funding was received or no conflicts of interest exist, this must still be explicitly stated.
Articles should be clearly structured and include appropriate headings and subheadings.
The Journal of Regional Energy Governance and Security does not use footnotes. All citations must follow the Chicago author–date system in the main text. Any supplementary or explanatory material that cannot be included in the main text may be provided as endnotes. Endnotes should be used sparingly and should not contain bibliographic references.
Manuscripts should normally conform to the following parameters:
Word count: min 8,000 – max 10,000 words (including Abstract, Tables, References, Figure or table captions, and Endnotes; excluding appendices)
Abstract: up to 250 words
Keywords: 5 keywords
Language: English (British spelling)
Citation style: Chicago Author–Date
File format: Microsoft Word (.docx) / OpenDocument Text (.odt)
Tables may be included where they enhance the clarity and analytical strength of the manuscript. They should be used to present structured data, comparative information, or summarised empirical findings.
Tables must be clearly numbered (Table 1, Table 2, etc.) in the order they appear in the text.
Each table must include a concise and descriptive title.
All tables must be referenced in the main text.
Tables should be submitted in an editable format (e.g. created in Word or provided as a .docx or .odt file component), not as images.
Any data sources must be clearly indicated below the table.
Tables should be self-explanatory and not require excessive reference to the main text for interpretation.
Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of all data presented.
Tables should not be used to duplicate information presented elsewhere in the manuscript.
Authors may include figures, tables, maps, diagrams, and photographs where these contribute directly to the argument of the article.
Figures and images must be clearly referenced in the main text.
Each figure must include a numbered caption and a brief descriptive title.
High-resolution files must be provided separately in a standard format (e.g. .PNG, .JPG).
Images must be original or used with full permission from the copyright holder. Authors are responsible for securing any necessary permissions.
Any non-original material must include a clear source attribution in the caption.
Figures should be submitted in a publication-ready format; the journal does not undertake redrawing or extensive redesign.
Images must be relevant to the scholarly argument and not included for decorative purposes.
Where applicable, maps and diagrams should be legible in digital format and designed for online viewing.
The anonymous version must contain no information that could identify the author(s).
Must be removed or anonymised:
Author names
Institutional affiliations
Email addresses
ORCID identifiers
Acknowledgements (including funding bodies if they identify the author or institution)
Self-references that clearly reveal identity (e.g. “as I argued in my previous work…” → replace with neutral phrasing like “as previously argued” or “Author 2021”)
Metadata in file properties (important in Word and ODT files)
Must remain:
Title
Abstract
Keywords
Full main text
Figures, tables, and captions
References (normal citations are allowed, including self-citations if anonymised properly)
Endnotes (if used)
Optional good practice: Replace author self-citations with neutral phrasing if necessary (e.g. “Author (2022)” in reference list if identity is obvious, but generally self-citations can remain unless they clearly disclose identity).
This is the complete version used after acceptance or for editorial processing.
Must include:
Title of article
Author(s) full name(s)
Institutional affiliation(s)
Email address of corresponding author
ORCID iD (if available)
Acknowledgements (including funding sources)
Conflict of Interest Declaration
Funding Statement
Full manuscript content (identical to anonymised version)
Complete references
Optional but recommended:
Author contribution statement (if multiple authors)
Data availability statement (if applicable)
The anonymised manuscript and the non-anonymised version must be identical in content, with the exception of identifying information removed from the anonymised file.
All manuscripts must be submitted via the journal’s dedicated submission process, which reflects its independent and community-oriented editorial model. As the Journal of Regional Energy Governance and Security is not affiliated with a commercial publishing house, submissions are made directly by email to the editorial team.
Each submission should include a brief cover letter addressed to the Editor, outlining the article’s main contribution to scholarship and its relevance to the journal’s scope. Authors must also provide both an anonymised manuscript for peer review and a separate non-anonymised version for editorial processing, along with a short author biography.
This approach is designed to foster close engagement between authors and the editorial community while ensuring a rigorous and transparent peer-review process grounded in scholarly merit.
Upon submission, manuscripts undergo an initial editorial screening to assess relevance, originality, and compliance with the journal’s scope and technical requirements. Submissions that pass this stage are sent for double-blind peer review by at least two independent expert reviewers.
Based on reviewer reports, the editorial team makes one of the following decisions:
Accept
Minor revision
Major revision
Reject
Revised manuscripts may be subject to further rounds of review where necessary.
All submissions must be original, unpublished work and must not be under consideration elsewhere.
Authors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of their work and the proper acknowledgment of all sources. Plagiarism in any form is strictly prohibited.
Authors must disclose any potential conflicts of interest at the time of submission. Where research involves human participants, authors should confirm that appropriate ethical approval has been obtained in accordance with institutional or national guidelines.
The journal adheres to principles of academic integrity, transparency, and research ethics consistent with established international publishing standards. Cases of academic misconduct, including plagiarism or data fabrication, will result in rejection or retraction where applicable.
The Journal of Regional Energy Governance and Security permits the limited use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools for assistance in the preparation of manuscripts, including language editing, formatting, summarisation, and proofreading.
However, AI tools must not be used to generate substantive scholarly content, including arguments, analysis, interpretation, data, or research findings. All intellectual responsibility for the manuscript rests with the author(s).
Any use of AI tools must be disclosed in a statement included at the end of the manuscript, specifying the nature and extent of their use. Failure to disclose AI assistance may be treated as a breach of publication ethics.
AI tools cannot be listed as authors, and they do not meet the criteria for authorship under the journal’s editorial policy.
Authors remain fully responsible for verifying the accuracy, originality, and integrity of any content that has been assisted by AI tools.
